For one reason or another, the 90s is like a magnet for me.
I just think everything was better back then.
Let me give some examples:
Fashion was a lot more creative and there were a lot of doors that were yet to be open - the birth of Streetwear.
The NBA became a permanent part of pop culture.
Team intros gave you chills, even to this day.
Highly recommend this article for a deep dive into how and why it was so good.
My mighty (Essendon) Bombers were winning.
The WWF successfully passed the baton over from Hulk Hogan & Macho Man Randy Savage to Bret The HitMan Hart, the Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels, and eventually to Stone Cold and the Rock.
Hypebeasts weren’t a thing.
People were buying Jordans to wear.
Starter was one of the biggest sportswear brands in the world.
Point Break and Terminator 2 were released.
The golden era for Hip-Hop & Rap..
John Farnham’s Last Time Tour hadn’t started yet.
For my European & American friends, this is the guy you’ve heard me put on time and time again at after hours.
Social media addiction wasn’t a thing.
Seinfeld. Nothing sums up the 90s more than this show. It also changed the way sitcoms were written and filmed.
We spent our youths playing in the streets instead of online creating an avatar of ourselves. Often on a trampoline that was missing a few too many springs and was asking for somebody to break a leg.
Gaming changed forever with N64’s Golden Eye. This was the world’s first FPS(First Person Shooter) to be made available on a console. Although somebody picking Oddjob was a decent way to ruin the evening.
Here is a nice deep dive on Golden Eye.
And I guess it’s important to mention the movie where this brand got its name.
Now, this newsletter is not only going to be about the 90s.. but this is the era that I draw a lot of inspiration from, so I thought some context was needed.
Thanks for reading.
And don’t forget..
DISTRICT 5IVE IS FOREVER
Is there anything I missed? Let me know if so.
Also, I’m new to this whole Substack thing, your comments should help get eyes on this bad boy.
Hi! 🤗 I don't know if you might be interested but I love to write about fashion, travel and our relationship with clothes. My writing has not commercial purposes, in fact I focus on sustainability. I talk about anything related primarily to vintage and pre loved fashion 🎀 but also slow living and slow traveling 🌱 I like to explore the impact textile industry and consumistic culture have on the environment and also what people can do to shift the tendency.
